Who knew that your washing machine wasn’t automatically clean every time a load of laundry was washed? NOT us! All along we have assumed the washing machine does the cleaning and you don’t have to clean it! Wrong! Recently, some washed laundry started having a funky smell to it and we couldn’t figure out why. Low and behold after some online research, we discovered you need to wash your washing machine. Bacteria can build up inside your tub and gaskets and make your clothes stinky. Trust me the smell is horrible!

Don’t run out and buy those expensive washing machine cleaners in the store, you can make your own and you probably have the 2 ingredients on hand. This recipe is for top loading standard washers.

2 cups white vinegar or lemon juice
2 Tablespoons dish washing liquid

Pour ingredients into washer and run the cycle through with HOT water.
If you have a bleach or fabric softener dispenser be sure to wipe those out. I did this once, opened the lid of the washer and let everything dry completely.

Yeah! Are clothes do not smell! I plan to do this every 3 months or so, or as needed!

Making your own cleaning solutions, is a definite way to save money and the environment! Do you make any of your own cleaners?

Thanks for the recipe to clean the washer. I make my own laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent.

I think I will clean the washer this weekend!
