You can cook perfect corn on the cob in the microwave. Honestly, you can. We don’t normally “cook” in the microwave, corn on the cob is the exception.

Nothing says summer like a good ear of sweet corn on the cob! From June through September there is an abundant supply of sweet corn available in Pennsylvania. Farmers will sell at roadside stands, in pick up trucks along the highway and you can always find it at the local Farmer’s Market. There are so many varieties to chose from and our family will try them all, no favorites!

Every Friday we buy a dozen or two of fresh sweet corn. Cook it up for supper, eat it for lunches at work and freeze it for soup or other recipes. There are times when we don’t have times to use the traditional boil water method of cooking the corn on the cob or don’t feel like heating the grill up. When you only need to cook an ear or two the microwave is our favorite method. It’s super easy, ready in less than 5 minutes and perfect for work or home.

The directions are simple. You may need to adjust cooking times depending on the power of your microwave.

I’ve tried several different methods of preparing the corn on the cob in the microwave and here is the only one I stick with. YUM!

Leave the corn in the husks, cut off any floppy silks, and microwave 2-3 minutes per ear. Two ears are ready in 5 minutes in our microwave, but it will vary. The corn silks just fall right off with ease. The corn is so moist and naturally sweet that we often just skip the butter and dig right in.

  1. Leaving the husk on adds tremendous flavor..leave on wrap in water moistened paper towel 5 min for average sized ear…

  2. Cooking corn in the microwave you do not have to leave the husks on!! Take the husk and silks off. Place the corn on a microwaveable plate 1 ear 2 min, 2 ears , 3 min, 3 ears , 4 min, 4 ears 6 min! And so on. Set corn so it has space between each ear. If you cook three or more make like a tick tack toe with the corn so it all cooks evenly.

I removed everything a place the corn in the microwave in a damp paper towel with the same timing as stated..2 minutes per ear, comes out great each and every time!
