Easy fall dessert. Apple Dumplings.
Apple Dumplings

Happy fall Y’all. I know it’s not officially fall, but it is officially apple season in PA. We look forward to apple dumplings every year. We don’t have our own trees to harvest, (we have one tree that feeds the deer) but are lucky enough to live in a small farming community with several orchards. If you have a favorite kind of apple, it’s probably grown by one of our local farmers. Since we have an abundance of apples available to us, it’s time to get baking. We enjoy pies and cakes but our favorite apple dessert is good old PA Dutch Apple Dumplings. There’s just something about a flaky dough full of warm syrupy cinnamon apples, that says “Eat me now!” Serve your apple dumplings with milk or vanilla ice cream for an extra special treat.

Here is an easy recipe for Apple Dumplings that is sure to become a new family favorite this fall!

Apple Dumplings Ingredients:

4 medium apples (Haralson, Macintosh,or  Pink Lady)

1/2 cup brown sugar

3 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

2 TBSP stick margarine

softened 2 refrigerator pie crusts egg wash( 1 egg beaten + 1 TBSP of water combined) sanding sugar

Directions:

-Preheat oven to 375 degrees. -Wash, core & peel the apples. -Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and margarine, mix well -Spoon in the brown sugar mixture into the core of apple. -Unroll the two pie crusts.  Cut the first one in half and the second one in quarters. -Using one quarter of pie crust, sit the apple in the center of the quarter crust and gently pull the crust up to the top of the apple covering the brown sugar mixture. Depending on the size of your apples you may have to use some of the other pie crust to cover the apples.

-Repeat this process for all the other apples.

-Apply the egg wash with a kitchen brush to the crust covered apples. -Using a small leaf cookie cutter cut out several leaves or shapes from the leftover pie crust and position them on the top of the apple. -Apply egg wash on the leaves as well. -Sprinkle with sanding sugar. -Bake at 375 degrees for 50 minutes. -Allow to slightly cool before eating.

  1. What do you do with the crust you cut in half?

    1. I have that same question. I guess it’s used for the decorations? But why is it cut in half? I’d say get 2 more apples and make more dumplings!

    2. You use the halves and cut out the decorations to put on top of the apples. Or make more dumplings if you like. Thanks
